Mozart's "The Magic Flute", circa 1791 - Lot 140
Mozart's "The Magic Flute", circa 1791 Rare folded fan, the double sheet in black and white painted skin on both sides. In a palace, a couple is seated before a richly adorned table, surrounded by soldiers and courtiers. On the reverse, in the distant countryside, soldiers and two horsemen clash. To the right, three helmeted ladies stand in front of a lying soldier, his sword and shield beside him. One of them is clutching a snake (act one, scene 3). This rare iconography can be compared with the drawings and engravings used during performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous opera "The Magic Flute" or "Die Zauberflote", in particular the drawings by Joseph and Peter Schaffer, for a 1793 performance in Vienna (drawings preserved in Vienna, Historisches Museum Der Stadt Wien). Bone mounting without decoration. Height 29.5 cm-H.f. 15.1 cm (wear, restorations)
