FRENCH SCHOOL Second half of the 18th century. Upper part of a trumeau: Allegory of Louis XV protector of Instruction. Apollo holding his lyre and Peace with his caduceus raise a laurel wreath above the bust of the king placed in a library, while cherubs, united by a garland of flowers, practice arithmetic, learning the alphabet, geometry and mechanics. Oil on canvas. Hinged form in the upper part (some restoration, notably in the lower part). Trumeau H.: 185.5 cm - W.: 74 cm; painted composition : H.: 116 cm - W.: 68 cm
