Léon-Paul FARGUE (1876-1947). L.A.S., Paris [1945?, to Jacqu - Lot 379
Léon-Paul FARGUE (1876-1947). L.A.S., Paris [1945?, to Jacques Jaujard, Director of Arts et Lettres]; 5 pages in-4. He thanks him for the increase in his annual literary allowance, and remains confined to his home by paralysis: "I am therefore a prisoner of my ills if I cannot go out by car. And little by little, I really feel madness coming over me". So he considers buying a car, for which he begs Jaujard to give him a voucher. He recalls his conduct during the Occupation, when he welcomed many hunted friends into his home: Jean Prévost, Jean Cassou, Jean Paulhan, Pierre Bost, etc. He nominated Max Jacob for membership of the Académie Mallarmé and sheltered his cousin Andrée Jacob and Jacques Maritain's niece, who were wanted by the Gestapo... He invites her to visit him at 1 Boulevard du Montparnasse.
