Louis XV - Ecu of Navarre - 1720 Bordeaux - Lot 44
Louis XV - Ecu of Navarre - 1720 Bordeaux DUP. 1657; Droulers 532 quoted by Gad 318, note: "Despite the edict of March 1720 prohibiting the minting of shields, an exceptional issue was made in July by the Bordeaux workshop. No specimen of this mintage has yet been found". 4 L: missing; Clairand 34107 indicates a mintage of 13990, without indicating the differences, and does not rate this coin. The differences of the coin presented today are a pointed ring and a fleur-de-lys, perfectly consistent with the examples known in 1719 for this workshop and the 1720 Bordeaux ecu de France, the following type, DUP 1665 appeared in the e-auction of 22/06/2024 MDC Monaco n°376, same differences (also not referenced in Clairand). Unknown to Sobin, missing from the Pronzato collection, the existence of this coin is now attested. Note a small phantom "K", not aligned with the legend, below the definitive K, a repentance on the part of the engraver? Weakness at the scroll, slightly clean. Weight: 24.31g. Coin strike. TTB.
