LANCRET Nicolas (School of) Paris 1690 - id. ; 1743 Les deux amis (La Fontaine, Conte tirée d'Athénée, Première partie, 6)). Oil on canvas (Re-tooled; some minor restorations) H. 49 - L. 58 cm Related to the composition by Nicolas Lancret exhibited at the Salon of 1739, and engraved in counterpart by Nicolas de Larmessin (Cf. Georges Wildenstein, Lancret n° 640 - 642, p.113 ; fig. 163 - Paris 1924). With the following quatrain: Can you deny having loved his Mother? And you, didn't you love her? The girl is your portrait. Ah, it's more like yours: there you are, trait for trait. They both love her too much to call themselves her father.
