Tribute to Prince Albert, circa 1862 - Lot 310
Tribute to Prince Albert, circa 1862 Lithographed fan sheet before cutting, illustrated with Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, represented as a statue on a pedestal. He is celebrated by England personified and the nations making up the Commonwealth on one side, and the great figures in the history of the Kingdom of England on the other. A phylactery runs around the leaf, inscribed in English: "Remembrance of gratitude and respect to the late Prince Albert who in realizing the idea of Inter-National exhibitions has contributed to bring together in closer relation the people of all countries and has thus prepared the happiness of the world". Mentioned lower left "F. Bonhomme Paris 1862". Stamped "Fonds Duvelleroy". Mounted on strong cardboard 37.5 x 66.5 cm N.B. The sheet was probably published at the time of Prince Albert's death in 1862. The sheet celebrates his achievements, in particular his role in organizing the 1851 exhibition at the Crystal Palace, pictured left, opposite the Palais de l'Industrie built for the 1855 Paris exhibition.
