Rare siliceous ceramic hexagonal facing tile with cobalt blu - Lot 63
Rare siliceous ceramic hexagonal facing tile with cobalt blue, black and turquoise painted decoration on a white ground, decorated with a cartouche containing a signature, surrounded by peonies and sinister scrolls, and encircled by a turquoise fillet. (Glaze chips mainly on the rim, and glaze run-off).
Mamluk Syria, Damascus, 15th century
Height 19 cm; Width: 15.5 cm
The inscription reads: "'amal ibn al-khabbaz", the work of Ibn al-Khabbaz (Khabbaz meaning baker).
Although this type of hexagonal mamluk tile is fairly common, it is very rare to find one with a signature. Tiles with similar decoration from the Tawrirzi mosque in Damascus are published in Arthur Millner, DamascusTiles, Prestel Edition, 2015, fig. 3.15 p. 75 and fig. 6.3 p. 246.
