First edition of the most remarkable of the author's writings, defending the idea of a democratic monarchy and advocating respect for individuals, economic freedom, tax equality and an end to privileges. The Marquis d'Argenson (1694-1757) was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under Louis XV and a friend of Voltaire. His treatise, written in 1737, circulated for a long time in the form of handwritten copies before being printed. A paperback copy, as issued in its charming dominoté paper cover.
