One of the earliest theoretical treatises on mercantilism.
The author, Law's first secretary, was a precursor of the physiocrats and a proponent of economic liberalism (cf. Spengler, p. 60). His work, originally published in 1734, forms a small encyclopedia of the then prevailing notions of the general economy of a state, earning Melon the title of the first French theorist of the mercantile system (Harsin).
