Sénac de Meilhan (1763-1803), lawyer at the Paris parliament and later intendant of La Rochelle, Provence and Hainaut, was one of the great critics of luxury at the end of the 18th century. In his Considérations, he studies man in society and reflects on the respective influence of war and peace on national character.
