Le Trésor du Meunier de Coëx (85 - Vendée) - Lot 1
Le Trésor du Meunier de Coëx (85 - Vendée)
This set of coins was discovered by the great-grandfather of the current owner, and passed down from generation to generation to our vendor. According to his father, now 93, the great-grandfather found the coins on his property, probably in the windmill.
The family farm was located in the commune of Coëx (85 - Vendée), in a place called de l'Eponge. The farm buildings and living quarters dated from the interwar period, but the farmland was older, forming part of the large Métairie de Sainte Marie, owned by the great-grandfather.
Interestingly, the village was called Le Moulin de l'Audardière, mentioned on the Cassini map, not far from the 16th-century Château de l'Audardière. This windmill belonged to the great-grandfather's family, and our client's father worked there before running the farm in 1937. The mill has since been destroyed.
Our customer's grandfather entrusted him with these coins when he was 12/13 years old. Nevertheless, all the coins were probably in the mill, and that's why our customer would like - if we have the DRAC's pre-sale authorizations - to call this treasure "Le Trésor du Meunier de Coëx".
The family farm was sold in the early 2000s, following the death of the grandmother in 1999.
The treasure consists of 83 ecus and 36 half-ecus, from 1649 to 1705, mainly reformations for 1690-1705.
Most of the coins (with the exception of 2 very worn mèche-longue écus) have not circulated, and show concretions and oxidation.
The workshops form a Rennes - La Rochelle - Nantes triangle, with a few workshops (Paris - Rouen - Tours) peripheral to this shape.
We would like to thank the DRAC Pays de la Loire for its authorization to make this treasure available to the public, and Mr. Jean-Yves Kind, curator at the Cabinet des médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
