The Dagger Party, France, circa 1791 A rare, large folded fan, the double sheet in engraved paper enhanced in color. Within a border of gilded flowers, and on a dotted background, two cartels host six couplets evoking "La soirée des poignards", to the tune "Ah le bel oiseau Maman", including "Quoi l'habit bleu vous fait peur/ Valeureux aristocrates". On February 28, 1791, at 10 p.m. in the Tuileries, revolutionaries were arrested by royalists trying to "save" Louis XVI. Their action was stopped by the king. The next day, they were referred to as the "Knights of the Dagger" who had attempted a counter-revolutionary action. Green paper reverse. Wooden mounting without decoration. Old collector's or exhibition label, bearing the number "62" on the plume. Height 40.5 cm-H.f. 20.8 cm (stains, wear, restorations)
